What is Green Energy Lab?

The Green Energy Lab research initiative is an association and incubator for applied research and innovation in the field of renewable energy and heating solutions. The founding members are four of Austria’s major energy providers: Energie Steiermark, EVN, Wien Energie and Burgenland Energie. With the so-called “Innovator Circle”, Green Energy Lab has an extensive network of more than 350 companies and market-oriented research facilities, technology providers and the public sector. The focus of the association’s activities is on the development, implementation and system integration of energy innovations bridging the gap between technology development and the market, and therefore functioning as an incubator and accelerator for the energy transition.

What others say about us:

  • Citation graphic: Bernd Vogl, Managing Director of the Climate and Energy Fund, says: “We are impressed by the remarkable results of our Flagship Energy Regions (Green Energy Lab, NEFI, WIVA). Business and science are working together to achieve practical solutions in the areas of energy transition, sustainable industry and climate-friendly mobility. This is how successful transformation works! In the Green Energy Lab in particular, solutions for a sustainable energy future are tested in real-life operations, together with a large number of partner companies and the general public. Green Energy Lab shows what a climate-friendly energy future could look like in Austria. The fact that significant steps have already been taken here is encouraging. We are experiencing rising energy prices, so it is becoming increasingly important to become less dependent on global upheavals and to make sustainable energy solutions competitive.”
  • Citation graphic: Monika Auer, General Secretary of ÖGUT, sagt: “Making the energy world fit for the future requires a variety of ideas, expertise, stakeholders, bundling and structuring at the same time, an open culture of innovation at the beginning and pragmatism in the transition to the market. Green Energy Lab meets this challenge with imagination, consistency and professionalism.”

Activities of Green Energy Lab

Flagship Region Energy: the Green Energy Lab innovation laboratory

Since 2018, Green Energy Lab has been operating Austria’s largest innovation laboratory for a sustainable energy future as part of the “Vorzeigeregion Energie (Flagship Region Energy)” funding programme of the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund. With the core region consisting of the capital Vienna and the surrounding provinces of Lower Austria, Burgenland and Styria, this innovation lab has a test market of five million consumers. More than 150 million Euros are to be invested in over 60 projects by 2026.

Other contracts and activities

Green Energy Lab acts as service provider for research and demonstration projects and supports collaborating companies and research institutions along their innovation journey. Additionally, Green Energy Lab provides services as a contractor for the public and private sector, e.g. in the field of needs or impact assessments. To give an example: Green Energy Lab in cooperation with the Austrian Society for Environment and Technology (ÖGUT) won a prestigious tender from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure to provide operational programme support for their R&D&I priority topics “Energy Transition” and “Climate Neutral City”. In addition, Green Energy Lab provides coordination services as part of an Austrian living lab initiative, in which prototype system solutions for integrated, regional energy systems are developed, tested and validated.
