A two-stage modernization process was started in the Saalfelden heating network to comprehensively demonstrate and evaluate a modernization concept. As part of the first stage, the existing heating network underwent a comprehensive modernization. Based on this, a technical concept for integrating a heat pump was developed. In addition to a further increase in efficiency, the integration of the heat pump also optimizes heat recovery from the flue gas. The flue gas condensation serves as the heat source and the district heating return serves as the heat sink.

As many of the modernization measures implemented can be transferred to existing district heating networks, this model solution has great potential for expansion in many Austrian and European district heating systems.
