The aim of this model solution is to demonstrate and prove the feasibility of integrating large-scale solar thermal systems in combination with thermal energy storage in heating networks.

A large-scale solar system (5,043 m² of high-performance collectors) and three heat storage tanks with a total of 180 m³ were installed in the Mürzzuschlag heating network for this purpose. In the summer months, the heat required will therefore be generated entirely by solar energy in future. In addition to optimizing the solar yield, load management options for district heating with storage are also being investigated.

For the district heating network in Mürzzuschlag, this will significantly decarbonize the energy mix and reduce dependence on energy imports.

Solar integration in heating networks has a high expansion potential and can be applied to many district heating networks.
