Space4Wind: Precise wind forecasts for potential wind power sites

The latest research findings from the Space4Wind project and the benefits of accurate, site-specific wind forecasts were presented on 16 May 2025 in the project's online workshop.

27 May 2025 Rheologic and Joanneum Research presented initial results of the Space4Wind project and the benefits of wind forecasts for calculating the profitability of wind turbines. To this end, satellite data, terrain models and flow simulations are linked with data from global weather models. This allows highly accurate wind yield forecasts to be generated for each location. In the small wind power sector in particular, terrain conditions can cause significant variations in wind yield, with deviations of up to 300 per cent. General data from freely available wind directories (such as the Global Wind Atlas) would therefore be far too inaccurate for calculating the investment costs and amortisation of wind turbines.
