Salzburg Absorption Heat Pump
THERMA FLEX DEMO PROJECT: Absorption heat pumps to increase waste heat utilization
This demo is part of the lead-project ThermaFLEX that has been completed successfully. Download the final report.
Objective of the project ThermaFLEX Absorption Heat Pump Salzburg
In this demonstration project two flexibility measures have been investigated to demonstrate the applicability of absorption heat pumps (AHP) on an industrial scale. The aim is to reduce the return temperature by integrating an AWP. The reduction of the return temperature allows an increase of the transport capacity in combination with an increased waste heat utilisation at the production site of a pulp manufacturer (AustroCel) in Hallein.
Approach and methodology of the project ThermaFLEX absorption heat pump in Salzburg
The first flexibility measure was the development of an eco-energy park in the south of the city of Salzburg. The concept has already been technically finalised. The realisation of the eco-energy park is currently on hold and will be re-evaluated as soon as a new regulatory framework is in place. The second flexibility measure involves the implementation and optimisation of a new absorption heat pump to increase the use of waste heat from currently unusable low-temperature waste heat. The installation started in October 2019 and will be completed in January 2020. As part of the installation, the existing flue gas condensation system was also replaced. In late 2020 and early 2021, final adjustments and parameter settings were made to the absorption heat pump. At the same time, the operation was intensively evaluated and provided with a monitoring concept, and some optimisation steps were identified and implemented step by step.
