Following the successful ISEC 2018, ISEC 2022 welcomed around 400 participants from 30 countries to exciting presentations and intensive discussions on the topic of energy transition. At ISEC 2024, organized by AEE Intec, the Green Energy Lab is on board as a cooperation partner for the first time to organize a session on Thursday, April 11, with the following program:

Innovations in Green Heating & Cooling: Advances, Applications, and Achievements (Thursday, 11.04.24, Time: 11.00 a.m - 12.30 p.m.) (Session hosted by: Green Energy Lab)

  1. Welcome and Introduction (Dr. Christian Kurz)
  2. Spatial Energy Planning – Steering Transition of Regional Energy Systems (Alexander Rehbogen)
  3. Transforming District Heating: Efficiency, Competitiveness, Resilience – The DeRiskDH Concept in a nutshell (Bernhard Mayr)
  4. Increasing flexibility in district heating systems – elements and solutions from the ThermaFLEX project (Joachim Kelz)
  5. AbSolut – Integration of Absorption Technologies in District Heating and Cooling Systems for Enhanced Economic and Ecological Impact (Carina Seidnitzer-Gallien)
  6. Q&A Session

This session will highlight near-market innovations in district heating systems, showcasing their potential to significantly boost efficiency and flexibility. These advancements are pivotal in accelerating the decarbonization of the entire heating and cooling sector. Hosted by Green Energy Lab, Austria's largest innovation lab for the research and demonstration of sustainable energy applications, numerous solutions for the greening of heating and cooling systems are being developed and put to the test. Approximately 60 research projects are underway, focusing on developing, refining, and testing technologies and processes for a renewable energy system. These projects are set to offer scalable and transferable model solutions, applicable at national, European, and global levels. Green Energy Lab is a research initiative funded by the Climate and Energy Fund of the Austrian federal government. The core region of the innovation lab comprises the four Austrian provinces Styria, Burgenland, Lower Austria, and Vienna with around five million individual consumers, around two thirds of Austria’s pv production, and almost the entire wind power generation capacity.

In general, ISEC 2024 will focus on how we can achieve energy sovereignty within a time horizon dictated by climate change and defined by policy. Global solutions such as the transformation of our economic system towards a sustainable circular economy, the complete phase-out of fossil fuels, the implementation of sector coupling and energy storage as well as the intelligent electrification of the energy supply are the focus of the presentations and discussions.

As an impetus for forward-looking concepts, ISEC 2024 aims to inspire pioneering ideas for the heat transition in the fields of renewable energies and resource efficiency and to facilitate a comprehensive exchange between research, industry and energy policy. Through ISEC 2024's collaboration with the international organizations UNIDO, IEA and REN21, all topics will have an additional focus on developing and emerging economies.

The conference program consists of invited speakers from industry, academia and politics as well as lectures and poster presentations by researchers from all continents. The Green Energy Lab has designed its own session at the conference, featuring presentations from its own project portfolio. In particular, visitors can expect presentations on the research approaches, sample solutions and results from the Green Energy Lab projects Spatial Energy Planning, DeRiskDH, ThermaFLEX and AbSolut.

Program:

  1. April 2024: Side Events, Welcome Reception
  2. Until April 11, 2024: Conference, B2B meetings, workshops, Green Energy Lab session (on April 11), conference dinner.
